2) Mandatory education backed in Washington

Support for mandatory boater education appears to be growing in Washington. The commission's Boating Safety Advisory Council is supporting a measure to require one-time certification of powerboat operators - a proposal the commission will consider next Thursday, according to a report in today's Seattle Times. If approved, the proposal would be sent to the state Legislature for action. The last year for which Coast Guard statistics are available, Washington was fourth in the nation in fatalities per 1,000 boats

3) Buddy Helms dies; helped develop deep-vee

Buddy Helms, who worked with the legendary Richard Bertram to develop the deep-vee hull, died Monday in Miami after being critically burned Nov. 18 at his Fort Lauderdale home. He was 87.

Helms was best known as a stock car racing pioneer who took part in the first NASCAR-sanctioned race in 1949, and was the nations oldest living stock car driver. Helms was critically burned Nov. 18 while replacing a fuel pump on a vintage Chevrolet marine engine. He died at the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami of congestive heart failure, according to his family. 5) F1 - Gillman wins 3rd in a Row!

United Arab Emirates: (5Dec2003) - American driver Scott Gillman was hoping that with 10 laps remaining in the 4th Annual Grand Prix of Sharjah, race leader (Finnish)Sami Selio would somehow break while holding a 2 second margin. His holiday gift was given to him when the Helsinki driver's boat started to slow. Gilman jumped into the lead and came home with his 3rd straight victory in a row and now leads the U.I.M. F1 World Championship by 2 points heading into next weekends final round at the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi.

The exciting 50 lap event started in front of the largest crowd in the 4 year history of the event with points leader Guido Cappellini of the Zepter Team leading off the pole position with Gillman moving quickly into 2nd which created a wild roar from the pro Emirates Team crowd
chearing him on all afternoon. Cappellini had a 2 second margin until he headed down into the south part of the 2.3 kilometer course in the Khaled Lagoon with his engine exploding and catching on fire down into turn 2. With the win Scott Gillman now leads the championship with 87 points to Cappellini's 85 with just one race to go setting up a great ending to a most exciting season on the U.I.M. F1 World Championship Tour. It all comes down to next Friday's event on the Corniche in downtown Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
